One in five women believe investing is only for men, research has revealed.

A poll, of 2,000 adults, found 74 per cent of females are more inclined to save their money, than attempt an investment (12 per cent).

Whereas only 63 per cent of men would put spare money into a savings account - with 21 per cent putting it in the stock market instead.

The gender pay gap (27 per cent) and access to financial education (15 per cent) were among reasons it's seen as a preserve for men.

However, 77 per cent of women would be interested in learning more about how to get started in investing.

And 47 per cent of men and women polled admitted they have no idea exactly how much money is in their pension pot.

The research comes as Bake Off star Candice Brown revealed her tops tips to make her money go further, including extreme meal prepping and bulk buying key items.

Other advice included evaluating when you last used your subscription platforms, religiously using cashback sites and freezing leftovers.

Candice Brown, who is working with pension provider Nest, which commissioned the research, said: “So many people don’t seem to know where their money goes.

“It took me a long time to really get to grips with what I was doing with my money, I didn’t think it would be easy to invest.

“It’s something I wish I’d done much sooner, before Bake Off changed my life.

“My employees all have Nest pensions so it was great to teach more members that they are actually investors themselves.”

The study found women are slightly more afraid of losing money in a bad investment than men (57 per cent vs 45 per cent).

But 35 per cent of females think improved financial education in schools would help boost the nation’s knowledge.

While 23 per cent would like to see a government initiative brought in to help people learn more about the process.

In terms of the ethics of investing, men and women are equal in considering it very important their investments are made in a positive way for the world (19 per cent).

Across all adults, only 12 per cent would describe themselves as very confident in starting to invest in something new to them.

Elizabeth Fernando, of Nest, which invests member’s monthly contributions into everyday brands, said: “Investing is for everyone.

“The cliché of the 1980s City broker in a pin stripe suit and red braces is almost always a male figure - but that stereotype is old and changing all the time.

“A pension can be an efficient way to save and invest money for the long term. If you have a pension, you’re already an investor.

“Investing knows no gender - it's about making informed choices and decisions to reach your financial goals.

“By breaking down stereotypes and promoting financial literacy, we can ensure that everyone has the chance to benefit from the opportunities that investing offers.\

The most stressful time of day is 8.15am, according to a study.

A poll, of 2,000 adult, found 35 per cent experience stress during the first part of the day, with the prospect of the working day ahead, struggling to leave the house on time, and oversleeping the most common early morning challenges.

Coping with the school run, looking for lost house keys, and figuring out what to wear are common anxieties too.

As are dealing with the unpredictability of kids’ emotions - in addition to both feeding and dressing them and making packed lunches.

And at a time of the day when every second matters, those polled typically lose 20 minutes and 28 seconds to morning trials and tribulations.

Following the findings, revealed as part of Onken's ‘Feed Your Inner Happiness’ campaign, Paddy McGuinness has shared his tongue-in-cheek time-saving tips [https://onken.co.uk/happiness-hub/].

Pointers include how to get the kids to do housework without them realising, how to stop them bickering, and how to help them with their homework when you’re stuck.

The TV funnyman said: “Follow my foolproof tips and you’ll be ready to tackle life’s curveballs - while still having time for yourself.

“Trust me, in my whirlwind of a schedule, I know just how precious those joy-filled moments can be.”

The study also found 51 per cent adults feel there’s ‘never’ enough time in the day to get things done.

While 51 per cent are ‘often overwhelmed’, with 47 per cent claiming to be busier now than ever before.

This might explain why 35 per cent ‘don’t know’ how to find time to do things which make them happy, and why 37 per cent have ‘forgotten’ how to make time for themselves.

It also emerged those polled aren’t enjoying as many as moments of happiness as they ‘need’.

According to the research, the typical adult ‘needs’ 27 moments of happiness a week - roughly four-a-day.

However, those polled actually get 20 - which is around three a day.

As a result, 57 per cent think they should make more effort to prioritise doing things which make them happy.

These include getting lost in a good book (54 per cent) and tucking into delicious food (48 per cent).

Carried out through OnePoll, the study also found 63 per cent would be interested in tips or advice on how to find more time for fun.

Mathilde van Roon, head of Onken, Emmi UK, added: “Let’s face it, the morning rush can often look like a comedy sketch gone wrong.

“Alongside Paddy, we’re spooning a little joy into your daily dash to feed your inner happiness.”

Launch of Glen Rosa at Ferguson Marine

Glen Rosa launch: What future for Ferguson Marine as hugely-delayed ferry leaves slipway?

It had taken shape at Ferguson Marine over more than eight years, but then, in a matter of seconds on Tuesday, was gone – leaving behind questions about the shipyard’s future (and recent turbulent past) as big as the huge slipway it had just vacated.

Glen Rosa’s belated launch could turn out to be the turning point for the embattled Port Glasgow yard. But we don’t know yet whether it’s towards the brighter future wellbeing economy Mairi McAllan talked up as the ship was sent on its way, or whether the yard’s hopes have effectively sailed away with the vessel.

Ms McAllan, surrounded by female apprentices as she spoke, pointed to them being the future of Scottish shipbuilding, which she said meant it was “in safe hands”.

The Cabinet secretary said later that her officials had just taken receipt of a bid for new investment from the yard to make it more competitive – which could be vital if Ferguson Marine is to secure a crucial contract to build seven smaller CalMac ferries similar to those it successfully completed in the not-so-distant past.

I also understand it will have to bid for the work rather than receive a direct award, to comply with international competition rules. However, Ms McAllan made no reference to Glen Rosa – and sister vessel Glen Sannox before it – being hugely behind schedule and multiple times over budget.

There was also nothing about the shock sacking of Ferguson Marine chief executive David Tydeman two weeks ago over “performance” issues, which senior industry officials told me was “unbelievable”. One said: “That guy is the best you have seen by a country mile.”

Glen Sannox left the yard for the last time last week for further sea trials, with the remaining work, including pipework for its liquefied natural gas fuel system, being completed at a dock in Greenock prior to its scheduled completion in May or June, with an update on this due next week.

If there are no further delays, the ferry is expected to start carrying passengers on the main Arran route to Brodick around August following CalMac’s own trials.

Glen Rosa is due to be finished in September next year. But as the crowd of hundreds – families of workers, locals and curious others – watched it slide away into the Clyde, more than just a landmark for drivers on the adjacent A8 has disappeared. The gap now spells “what next?”

Ferguson Marine’s interim chief executive John Petticrew, albeit a born and bred Inverclyde shipbuilder, and yard board member, is very much a caretaker manager, who has effectively been parachuted in for six months from Canada, where he now lives, to “put my best efforts into getting the vessels out of here as quickly as possible”.

Will he do things differently from his predecessor? “It’s a matter

A mum-to-be was diagnosed with cancer at five months pregnant - when her extreme morning sickness turned out to be a symptom of the disease.

Caitlin McAlinden, 24, put her cancer symptoms - including a golf ball-sized lump on her neck, nausea and fatigue - down to morning sickness.

But after losing two stone in four months she was referred to a haematology team at Arrowe Park, the Wirral.

They gave her a neck biopsy and diagnosed her with stage one Hodgkin lymphoma in March 2024.

Caitlin is expected to make a full recovery but has to take a steroid injection and a blood-thinning pill every morning.

After her baby boy is born, on May 8, she’ll start a four-week course of chemotherapy.

Caitlin, a primary school teacher, from Wirral, Merseyside, said: “This isn’t the pregnancy I was hoping for - I haven’t felt well this entire time.

“Everything I want to do after my baby is born has to be put on pause due to the chemo.

“My odds are really good - but having my baby will be a good distraction for everything I’m going through.”

Caitlin found out she was pregnant on September 16, 2023 - after feeling nauseous at her birthday dinner the week before.

Her first trimester was “rocky” and she originally believed she had a severe form of morning sickness.

She was vomiting at least once a day and would fall asleep intermittently throughout the day.

But it wasn’t until Christmas Day that she first noticed the pain in her neck and after weighing herself, noticed she’d lost two stone.

She said: “I went back to County Armagh to visit my family for Christmas.

“I remember Christmas Day, falling asleep on the sofa and waking up with a really sore neck.

“I thought I’d just slept funny, but I started massaging my neck.

“That’s when I found a lump, about the size of a pea.”

Caitlin didn’t want to see a GP at first - believing the lump was just another “weird” sign of pregnancy.

But in just a week, her tiredness became worse and the pea-size lump tripled in size.

“I was so, so tired,” she said.

“Walking up the stairs alone would make me need to go for a lie down.

“I felt my neck again one day and the lump had become golf ball-sized.”

Her partner, Connor, 27, a procurement manager, told Caitlin she needed to see a doctor as soon as possible.

She visited her GP on January 2 and was referred for an initial ultrasound on her neck.

They gave her a biopsy on January 16 and the clinician asked Caitlin if she had any family history of Hodgkin lymphoma.

She told them one of her second cousins had gone through it years before and they urgently sent her for more blood tests.

“My doctor’s whole demeanour changed when I said I had a family history of it,” Caitlin said.

“I went for a blood test on the same day.”

Caitlin was diagnosed with stage one Hodgkin lymphoma on March 12, 2024, and instantly started steroid treatment to shrink the mass on her neck.
