_lack-of-investment-making-tenby-harbour-an-39eyesore39-labelled-criminal-by-county-councillor.jpg "A lack of investment by Pembrokeshire County Council towards maintaining Tenby’s harbour has been labelled ‘criminal’ by one of the seaside town’s county councillors - leading to parts of the ‘picturesque’ area becoming an ‘eyesore’.<br/>In taking aim at the Local Authority’s lack of ongoing TLC for the harbour, county councillor for Tenby’s North Ward Cllr Michael Williams has sent correspondence to PCC’s streetcare manager Marc Owen calling once again for urgent improvements to the area.<br/>Cllr Williams has long called for work to be carried out, especially to some of the historic arches and garages along Penniless Cove Hill that lead all the way down.<br/>“When will the eyesores of these arches be addressed? They now are an awful blot on the harbour and need urgent attention,” stated Cllr Williams, who also called for the ‘rundown’ looking shelters in the gardens above to be removed.<br/>Some years ago, Tenby Civic Society expressed concern at the condition and appearance of the doors in some of the arches, stating that they were ‘clearly ripe’ for an upgrading project.<br/>“Tenby harbour has totally lacked any real capital investment for many years, and yet we see a continuing rise in fees for users,” continued Cllr Williams.<br/>“I have asked Officers and the Cabinet Member to look again at installing a usable gate on the sluice. Currently it is a waste of space, and if an access is provided could be a catalyst for a major improvement offering safety to vessels in bad weather and an ideal mooring for visiting yachts.”<br/>Works to make the sluice more 'user-friendly' were given the thumbs up by town councillors prior to Covid, with members told of an application from PCC for the replacement of stop logs with sluice control, which would ‘protect and enhance’ the area, as improving the amenity of the harbour.<br/>However, £128,000 of funding from Welsh Government earmarked to carry out improvements seemingly slipped through the net, and the plans never came to fruition.<br/>A recent meeting of Tenby Harbour User's Association, hinted that such plans could be revisited, and that the organisation would provide PCC with all relevant paperwork to start the process of looking for new sources of funding to pursue.<br/>“This harbour is a listed building and deserves enhancement from an aesthetic and financial point of view. It should be noted that the failure maintain a listed building is a criminal offence,” added Cllr Williams.<br/>")

_new-kits-for-pembrokeshire-teams-thanks-to-39new-york-welsh39-network.jpg "During the recent Bank Holiday, Tenby native Ty Francis MBE founder of the New York Welsh diaspora network - returned to his Pembrokeshire roots for a tour spanning three local rugby clubs, aimed at reinforcing the sport’s grassroots initiatives. <br/>Kicking off in Milford Haven, Ty gifted a new rugby kit to the Pembrokeshire Vikings, a mixed-ability squad led by Andrew Meddings and Simon Gardiner. <br/>Their commitment to creating a space where players of all abilities can thrive on the rugby field was celebrated with a #JerseyForAll. <br/>Notable attendees included co-sponsor Dom Barrett, MP Stephen Crabb, and MS Samuel Kurtz, with club captain and Special Olympics multi-gold medalist, Bleddyn Gibbs as the honoured guest.<br/>Ty then proceeded to Pembroke Ladies Rugby Team on Monday morning to unveil their latest kit, supported by the New York Welsh community, including contributions from Charlotte Jupp, originally from Saundersfoot, and Glenn Treacher of The Liberty NYC. He was joined by Club Chairman Richard Jelley, Chloe Jones, Jennifer Harvey, and Samuel Kurtz MS were in attendance to mark the occasion.<br/>The bank holiday tour concluded at Tenby United RFC’s Clicketts training ground, where the South Pembs Sharks girls rugby U16s and U14s teams were presented with their New York Welsh branded kits. Ty met with Jamie Barrellie, who oversees the hub, to celebrate the launch.<br/>This initiative held a personal touch for Francis, as the jerseys bore the initials ETS to honour his late aunt Estelle Townsend-Smith, a native of Narberth, who was also a staunch advocate for women's and disability sports. <br/>“She was a very proud supporter of what we do for female and disability sport, so it seemed fitting to have her initials on the sleeves,” he said.<br/>Since 2019, Ty along with his wife Alayna, a New York City Communications Executive, have been instrumental in equipping over a thousand Welsh individuals across women’s, girls’, and disability sports with new kits through their organisation, JerseyForAll.org<br/>Ty, a former Greenhill Comprehensive School pupil, expressed immense gratitude towards the local sports community in Wales and highlighted the invaluable support of all the volunteers. He voiced concern about challenges grassroots sports face, including a recent setback for Tenby United’s second XV by the Welsh Rugby Union, prompting questions about the union’s commitment to grassroots sports.<br/>“I’m thankful for the time and effort the coaches, managers, and volunteers put into supporting women’s and disability sport in Wales. Alayna and I are fortunate to be able to help provide the kits, but the real work gets done on and off the pitches by the players and support staff. <br/>“I’m also very grateful for the consistent support that Stephen Crabb MP and Sam Kurtz MS have offered. Grassroots sports are the lifeblood of local communities, and we are deeply disheartened to not see support from organisations like the Welsh Rugby Union and the Welsh Government.”")

Grants can be used for the purchase of materials (primer, masonry undercoat and exterior masonry paint) or towards the cost of using a contractor.<br/>Grants will provide 80 per cent of the total capital expenditure and schemes must be completed by November 2024.<br/>Best-selling American author and renowned travel writer Bill Bryson once wrote of Tenby after visiting the seaside town: “I had heard that it is a charming place, but in fact it is exquisite - full of pastel-coloured houses, sweet-looking hotels and guesthouses, characterful pubs and cafés, glorious beaches and gorgeous views!”<br/>Additional streets added to the scheme in towns already benefitting from the grant include - Market Square and Main Street in Fishguard, Market Street and Picton Place in Haverfordwest, Pembroke Dock’s Meyrick Street and Northgate Street in Pembroke.<br/>")
